Trinidad, Colorado - A Historic Building Survey

First Presbyterian Church Building

Map location #28.

The First Presbyterian Church at 224 North Commercial acquired the lot for their building in 1887 from the city. The church was not built until 1902, however. The architect was the Rev. Theodore S. Hawley. He had a degree in architecture from Carthage College, 111., and had previously designed and supervised the construction of the Post Office building in Topeka, Kansas in 1879.

The style is Gothic adaptation built on a rusticated Renaissance base. As the early photograph shows, the church at first had crinolated towers.

The early photograph was taken in 1905. The later one was taken in July, 1970.
