Trinidad, Colorado - A Historic Building SurveyKress BuildingMap location #43. The site of the S. H. Kress business and the adjacent Colorado Building provide a study in contrasts, the first being very ornate, the second relatively simple. It is the multitude of details from different periods in this three-story brick built in 1911 which again reveal the Victorian exuberance. Although rather ornate, in relationship to the scale of the building, the details are not overdone. Worth mentioning are the Ionic capitals and the decorative Romanesque arches. The city issued the deed to Edward Mitchell for this location in 1878 at the same time it deeded him the site for the Colorado Building. The owner at the time of construction was Trinidad Masonic Temple Association, which still retains the two upper floors while leasing the lower floor to businesses. The original photograph was made some time after 1912. The later photograph is dated August, 1970. Legal Description: Part of Lot 3; Block 100 OTS.
